Jose Ignacio Orlando

José Ignacio Orlando (Nacho) received his Software Engineering degree in 2013 at Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (UNICEN) in Tandil, Argentina. He obtained his PhD in Computational and Industrial Mathematics in 2017 from the same university, working under the supervision of Prof. Matthew B. Blaschko (KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium) and Prof. Mariana del Fresno (UNICEN, Argentina) with a PhD scholarship granted by CONICET. During his doctoral studies he worked on fundus image analysis based on machine learning and computer vision techniques. He has also worked as an intern in the Center for Visual Computing at École Centrale Paris (Paris, France)and as a visiting scholar in ESAT-PSI, KU Leuven. In January 2018 he joined the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Ophthalmic Image Analysis (OPTIMA, Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Medical University of Vienna) as a postdoctoral research associate. Since November 2019 he works at PLADEMA Institute (UNICEN) as an Assistant Researcher from CONICET, leading a research team in ophthalmic medical image analysis using AI. He’s the co-founder and project leader of retinar.

retinar was selected as member of the NVIDIA Applied Research Accelerator Program. Our project, entitled “retinar: assisting remote diabetic retinopathy screening with AI tools”, our joint initiative between UNICEN and Hospital El Cruce was awarded with 500 hours on V100 GPU instances via SaturnCloud.
