Retinar Receives the 2021 Annual Award from the National Academy of Medicine

Yesterday afternoon, we had the honor of receiving the 2021 Award from the National Academy of Medicine of Buenos Aires for our work on @retinarARG alongside @Tomass_Castilla, Alejandro Koch, Marcela Martínez, and Mercedes Leguía from @ElCruceHospital and Ignacio Larrabide. The work summarizes the results we achieved with @Tomass_Castilla in improving the algorithm for the detection of referable diabetic retinopathy that we developed in his undergraduate thesis, and which we recently published at #SIPAIM2022, the congress of @SIPAIM_Society.

As we aim for @retinarARG to be a real and effective solution in the clinic, we evaluated the method in different scenarios, including comorbidities, different image qualities, using pairs of eyes, etc. More than 60,000 test images in total. Additionally, we included studies from Argentina 🇦🇷 provided by Marcela, director of the Martínez Ophthalmological Center, and Mercedes, from the Ophthalmology Service of @ElCruceHospital. And we verified that our model works excellently with patients from our country.

This work would not have been possible without the support of everyone @yatirisARG @plademaARG and the funding from @agenciaidiar, @CONICETDialoga, @SUnicen, and @produccion_arg. We now aspire to obtain the funds to create the MVP and put our model into productive use. This award is a beautiful push forward in such a challenging context, and an invitation to continue demonstrating that we can bring real solutions to national problems from @FCEx_UNICEN @UNICEN_Oficial in Tandil, and for the whole country.
